Days When I Can't Talk

Back to basics- that is the prevailing framework highlighted by the approach of evolutionary psychology. It emphasizes the concept of being “FIT” to be able to bear offspring of their own. Hence, the need to survive and reproduce calls not only for the benefit of the person himself but rather including the genes that he carries.

With such a basic framework of contention, this approach has fired several reviews and critics. As a matter of fact, the earliest I have encountered was thrown to me by my Social Psychology instructor asking, “So which should it be Ms. Gallego, nature or nurture?” I had it always in my mind to say neither is more important than the other. Nature affects nurture and nurture also influences nature.

That was then.

Nature viewed in the context of evolutionary psychology, covers the innate biological requirement to survive and persist hence influencing human behavior to achieve reproductive fitness. Those who fail to adapt to this prerequisite fails to carry on genes with the succeeding generations. With this conviction, it is safe to say that the population of today is therefore a product of the evolving need for survival of the past generations.

Some critics argue that evolutionary psychology fails to consider the role of the environment in shaping human behavior. Albert Bandura for one rejects what he believed to be a “one-sided evolutionism” and pointed that environmental and biological conditions influence each other. Other critics like Hilary and Steven Rose (2000) labeled the views of evolutionary psychology to be upholding behavioral fixity (Kurzban 2002, p. 99-109). They say that the approach dwell so much on genetic predispositions dismissing cultural, historical and individual variables.

The critics above actually failed to go back to the “basic” ally of evolutionary Psychologists- the principle of survival. The need to survive propels behavior. Evolution did not only give us bodily structures and biological potentialities. It gave us the purpose. Behavioral flexibility is therefore a fundamental message of evolutionary psychologists. Every feature of the human body, from the genes to the phenotypes they carry, were designed to develop, learn and behave in ways that will bring about genetic survival in generations. Evolutionary psychology does not reject the role of culture, history, and individual variables. It actually believes that organisms behave contingently in the environment and their own current state.

Behavioral adjustments enable them to tune with environmental expectations. Tuning up means adaptation and adaptation brings about survival. Survival enables reproduction and reproduction facilitates the passage of genetic material to the next generation.

To FIT. This is the role of every living organism- to adapt and to be able to fit. Adaptation, like any other process is dynamic. They can also generate by products and random effects. Each adaptation generates different conditional possibility. Let’s take the analogy of Edward H. Hagen, and evolutionary psychologist from the Institute of Theoretical Biology, Berlin.

“Consider a hypothetical population of organisms whose ‘natures ‘ (adaptation) are completely genetically specified and unchangeable, and just to keep things simple, whose natures are identical. Suppose, further that these organisms have a number of identical preferences, desires, what-have-you (all unchangeable), but because resources are limited , they often find that social circumstances are at odds with their preferences and not all individuals can fulfill their desires. In other words, these creatures are often in conflict with one another. Suppose that these organisms have the ability to negotiate with one another by offering and withholding benefits, and perhaps by imposing costs. Because our hypothetical organisms are able to negotiate, they are able to form social arrangements that are potentially equitable."

Adaptation, like the nature or the hypothetical organism in this analogy, can be similar in many ways. This process, however is more complex than just being a necessary strategy to survive. Even if a circumstance like the goal to survive is so much identical in majority of the population, environmental outcomes will always be enormous. That is, even if each adaptation is done to preserve gene survival, its possible genetic consequence might not be geared towards this initial goal. Gene by products and random effects may also initiate the genetic loss in the survival lineage. Like Hagen’s statement, that “When circumstances change, new agreements can be forged,” the standards of “fitness” could also change with time. Hence, natural selection is not only one source of change. Then again, survival is. If generic survival is the main goal, human survival and reproduction is the basic strategy. You see, one thing I want to place in the context of persuasiveness is not the argument that each of these approaches lay on the table. The basic principle that they carry wins over a significant number of other options. Evolutionary psychology is what psychoanalysts call “id” and the behaviorists call the “reinforced behavior”. It could explain several other psychological principles hence it cannot be dissuaded against.

I was once asked by my Social Psychology instructor, “So which should it be Ms. Gallego, nature or nurture?” Now I have the best option for that. Basic human nature...

SURVIVAL.

So How Was My First Day of September?

(1) I intended to be up by 4:00 AM, but because of the wonderful thing called "snoozing" I woke at 5:36 instead. I have some matters to attend so early therefore I skipped the shower (er?) and had a quick breakfast. (2)  I have a new favorite cereal by the way, it is the Quaker's tropical fruit oatmeal. Way better than Kokocrunch, I tell you guys. (3) Okay so after the breakfast, I packed my stuffs and headed to the city. I am out for a 2-day out of town work.  (4) Long travels are boring and to keep me company is the famous video-sharing website called Youtube. Killing the time could mean watching porn clips (ayt?) and if you get bored with the nasty tricks they pull, you can always switch channels... ANC's Square Off  Law School Debates is a good alternative. Moving on, after attending to my business agenda I checked in at my favorite "home away from home" destination and I was greeted with a wonderfully scary sight upon arrival: (5) A law student (probably in her mid 20's) reading Revised Penal Code, and across her is a child (probably 6 years old and might be her son judging from the motherly gestures she pulled together... pwew! LONG SENTENCE!). The IPAD was trying to keep the child busy while the lady was studying. I remained motionless as I observed  them and suddenly I remembered all the jokes and scary declarations of my close friends when they learned that I am pursuing a career in lawyering. They say that if I don't conceive of a child before I graduate (4-5 years from now) or if I don't get married anytime soon I won't be able to have a child  or marry at all. They based that premise on the life of other known successful women out there. Successful women don't deserve a family of their own? That just freaks the freaking individual out of me! What if they are right? What if male species will get way too intimated to ask me for marriage when I get toooo successful? (assuming hahahahahaha!) and what if I get too busy with my chosen career that I can't afford to raise a little Charlotte or a little Carlo anymore? God forbids! Ok ok ok... enough of that thinking aloud moment. (6) I was able to calm my thoughts by watching good shows at AXN and concluded my morning by checking emails, writing journals and what not.
Afternoon...
(1) Late lunch while watching Disney Pixar UP. I was eating and crying at the same time. Who cries watching cartoons? Well, I do! (2) Lounging with nothing but a blanket on. Busy morning must be sedated by laid back afties, agree? (3) I planned for a quick nap but it got extended until mid PM and when I woke up I was rushing to finish my assigned cases for homework. Dang! I am the queen of cramming when it comes to school stuffs. (4) It was almost evening when I finally had the courage to take shower. (Subscribe if you are too lazy to take a bath during weekends, don't be shy la... come go out of your shell.). A little dolly-ing up and I am good to go!
Of course no-class evenings must be spent doing what I do best... MALLING. (1) This tiny feet can literally visit countless stores in an hour, (2) and these lovely pieces of happiness always make my purse super busted.  Oh look at those pink kitchen stuffies... they are way too... pink, right?? Haha! My 1st of September "ME" time ended when I met beau for dinner (3). It is wonderful to conclude your day with someone you can most relate and who never hesitates to spoil you with tiny little acts of love, (4) a new bag is not too tiny though. gift (5) When I got home, I put on my favorite pajama crawled up in bed, pig out with my comfort foods and watch good movies until I doze off.

What did I get during the mall hours?
Well, nothing special just a couple of staple items that I am running low... mostly
face stuffs with acne-buster formula. I am growing lot of pimples lately. Tsk!
I also bought some cute "nonsense" stuffs, couldn't help it really. Expect for a haul post anytime soon.
Thank you so much for much for stopping by and happy "BER" months!

My Tuesday is quite hectic. Have tons of checklist to complete: bank transactions, errands, and a major subject midterm exam to study for. Days like these when I don't have much time to play with my wardrobe, I find solace with laid back ensembles. Jeans, comfy tops, flats and silver accessories. Anything that don't rebel with each other and don't take a lot of time combining, that's what you need when you are in a hurry. To get an aura of a "well-done" look, put on your favorite red lipstick. It instantly adds glam to your look, try it!
There you go, a laid-back outfit that is perfect for a busy day.

Talk to you later.

Law School Diaries: Semestral Report (part 1)

During my first week of law school, I attended an institutional mass and I remembered praying for:
1. Strength and health for my day to day struggles
 2. Sanity to pull me off the thick books, long cases, bloody exams and trembling recitations
3. Patience...patience and more patience in dealing with things that are alien to me
4. GOOD set of friends

The first few weeks (or months) were tough. I struggled with almost everything... schedule, mental capacity, new environment, foreign jargons... the list could be unending. Mental capacity? Yes, I struggled  with my low space memory, which stores mainly of worthless stuffs. Memorization and retrieving of data seems very difficult for me. My brain was not prepared for law school. Sure it is. However, my heart refuses to give up.

Strength and health were elusive at first. I either go to school with a weary heart or a hard cough. I even got super sick during the third week. My sanity is keeping me afloat though even during the days when I've got nothing else to do except to read hundred of pages and memorize countless lines. Sure I missed my old life at times. I missed the days when I can stay awake in the most ungodly hours and worry not a single thing the following day. I missed the carefree version of me but I am starting to love the responsible/committed child that is growing in my system.

I have to admit that I always become impatient about how slow the days pass by. I want to fast-forward everything and stop on the day of my graduation. I am glad however that God gave me no choice but to savor both the happy and brutal moments of my chosen field because the low moments made me appreciate the highs even more.

Slowly...
God is granting my prayer.

I am slowly getting used of the system. I am starting to top exams (ahem!) and starting to get the attention of my professors (because of my "bunny ear" head band). I am doing good, I THINK and most of all I am starting to grow my circle. I prayed for a good set of friends and God gave me more than that. He gave me family and friends rolled into one.
